  17. -------------------
  18. This is a list of of U.S.-based Internet access providers. The InterNIC
  19. also maintains lists of international providers. To obtain these lists, 
  20. please contact Information Services at the above addresses or phone numbers.
  21.  
  22. The document contains a list of providers indexed by area code. There is 
  23. also a main list that is organized alphabetically where more detailed 
  24. information about each provider is listed. All providers listed offer at
  25. least interactive TCP connections (i.e. telnet, ftp). Providers who offer
  26. only electronic mail or other gated-type access (such as CompuServe, 
  27. America On-Line, Prodigy and small BBS systems) are not listed here.

  35. Finding your provider
  36. ---------------------
  37. To find an internet access provider for your region, simply look up your 
  38. area code in the index and find the names of providers who service your 
  39. area code. Then look them up in the main list and contact them via the
  40. information found there. 
  41.  
  42. Please note that not all providers furnished information by area code so 
  43. while they are this list, they may not be in the index.
  44.  
  45. If your area code is not listed in the index, there are providers who
  46. have nationwide access whom you can contact. These providers are listed 
  47. at the begining of the index. If there are still no local dial-in numbers, 
  48. your only options are to choose providers who are closest to you or choose
  49. providers who have 800 dial-in access. These providers are also listed at 
  50. the beginning of the index.

  52. How to get connected
  53. --------------------
  54. All you need to do is contact your provider either by phone, fax or 
  55. electronic mail. While a lot of information is listed here, we highly 
  56. recommend calling the providers to find out about other services they
  57. may provide (technical support, network consulting, etc.) and/or their
  58. lastest information.
  59.  
  60. The modem numbers listed for the providers are a method for people to 
  61. register on-line. Just dial up the number listed and leave the necessary
  62. information. This type of service generally allows users to get started 
  63. with an Internet account much faster than handling it via the phone. 
  64. Generally, registration of this type requires a credit card.
  65.  
  66. What the services are
  67. ---------------------
  68. Shell : Offers a basic connection running on top of an UNIX environment. 
  69.         Services include eletronic mail, Usenet news, FTP, telnet, gopher,
  70.         IRC, etc. Most providers have a menu-driven interface as well.
  71. UUCP  : Offers a method for computers to transfer files from machine to 
  72.         machine without user intervention. 
  73. SLIP  : Allows computers to be temporarily connected the Internet. You can 
  74.         run services such as FTP and telnet directly from a PC or Mac.
  75.         This also allows you to run some of the popular graphical user 
  76.         interface software (such as Mosaic and other World Wide Web clients).
  77. PPP   : Similar to SLIP but a much better protocol.
  78. FTP   : Offers anonymous FTP space.
  79. LAN   : This is for connecting a local area network to the Internet.
  80. WWW   : Offers space for maintaining Web pages.
  81. ISDN  : High-speed network connections that are offered as dial-up access
  82.         via digital modems. 
  83. 56-T1 : These cover the 56K through T3 speeds. These are dedicated line 
  84.         connections that are high-speed and high-bandwidth.
